Loving Cascais!

After the heat and frustration of the last couple of days, we decided to have a more quiet day today which is our last day here.  It seems Wednesday is the day the street cleaners are out as I was woken up by the sound of machinery about 5:30 a.m.  The silver lining was that about an hour later the view from my hotel room just before sunrise was beautiful.

Wednesday in Cascais is market day - although I expect the food market in the permanent building is probably daily.  The things being sold were much the same as other markets, although with a Portuguese emphasis, obviously.

After our visit to the market, the remainder of the day was devoted to shopping - which is fabulous here - and having lunch.  We ate at Bubbles and Bites which is run by a Dutch couple.  We were both craving vegetables which it seems aren't that plentiful with dinners.  So, lunch was a salad and a glass of rose sitting indoors under a fan.  That sure helped as it was another very hot day.

The rest of the afternoon was devoted to exploring the fabulous boutiques.  Lots of things tempted us!

For dinner, we went to a restaurant that a gal in one of the boutiques had recommended called Terroso, another one of the highly rated restaurants here.  The service, once again, was great as it has been everywhere we have been in Portugal.  We had a fried cheese served with a pumpkin marmalade - which I got the recipe for when I was at a restaurant in Porto.  It is yummy!  I ordered a chicken schnitzel in a mushroom sauce.  I have to say that pretty much every dish I have had here has way too much salt for my taste.  However, it was tasty.  The wine I had was from Lisbon and called the "Shakespeare wine" because in the Bard's play, Henry VI, the same wine was mentioned.  It came in a blue-tinged bottle and was very dry and tasty.  Never expected to have a wine linked to Shakespeare here in Portugal!

In the square in front of our hotel, a war plane has been assembled.  It turns out it is a Lockhead Martin (Canadian).  October 5th is a national holiday here so maybe it has something to do with that.  We probably won't find out as we drive south to Lagos on the Algarve tomorrow.  Mr. Google might be able to tell us if I remember to look it up!

One thing for sure is that if I ever have the chance, I would return to this place in a heartbeat.  It is absolutely delightful!

  1. Have to love the "tile" work on the streets. I've seen many different ones that look like 3D. Fabulous work.
